One-size-fits-all: Classes typically teach at the pace of the group, not catering to individual needs, strengths, or weaknesses. Cantonese speakers can feel held back when they’re learning alongside people who only speak English.

(We know ni hao is nei hou! 🙄)

Wrong focus: Traditional classrooms often focus on memorization of grammar rules, characters and vocabulary instead of preparing you for real-world situations.

Rigid Schedules: Lastly, schedules are fixed, making it hard for busy people to keep up with the demands of the class

Basic Language Learning Apps.

Basic Language learning apps are a great option if you’re not serious about learning Mandarin or you’re just doing it as a hobby.

But if you want real results FAST, then I don’t recommend using language learning apps.

Heres.why

Surface-level learning: Apps are great for learning basic vocabulary , but when it comes to

actually holding a conversation? - They completely drop the ball.

(Was I the only one in the “Duolingo Streak But Still Can’t Converse” club?) 😅

Lack of real context: Apps typically fail to integrate any real-world scenarios, which are crucial for understanding how Mandarin is used in daily life. This can make you feel like even though you’re putting a lot of time in, you can barely hold a conversation.

No speaking feedback: Most apps don’t offer meaningful feedback on your spoken Mandarin, so even if you’re repeating phrases aloud, you may not be correcting mistakes.

Inconsistent Tutoring.

Now this is a decent option, you get personalized feedback from a certified Mandarin expert, you move at your own pace, and you can fit it into your schedule unlike classrooms.

But it’s still not the best option…

Heres.why

Expensive: Private tutoring can be prohibitively expensive (30-50$ per hour), especially if you want regular sessions with a qualified tutor. Research shows that it takes about 40 hours of 1 on 1 Tutoring to reach HSK Level 1. This means that even for the cheapest tutor, after a $1200 investment, you’d still be 2 levels and over 80 hours away from being conversational. This makes it difficult to sustain over time.

Lack of Structure: Tutors may lack a structured curriculum, leading to a disjointed learning experience - making you feel lost and stuck in the beginning stages.

Quality: The effectiveness of tutoring hinges entirely on the quality and teaching style of the tutor. The sad truth is you can’t control the effectiveness of a tutor and will have to try a few bad ones before finding a tutor who suits your needs.

On top of all, the biggest problem with the methods listed above is that you get treated like someone who only speaks English.

Like you’re starting from complete scratch.

Which is not true because you know Cantonese.

Mandarin will be difficult for you ONLY when you learn it as an English speaker.

Why?

Because English and Chinese don’t share any similarities.

❌They sound different.

❌They look different.

❌And the structure of both languages is not the same.

Which is why the FSI categorizes Mandarin as the hardest language to learn ONLY FOR English speakers.
